CHILE UPDATES #5
Ski for Free Tomorrow in Chile's 8th Region?
Ski for Free Tomorrow in Chile's 8th Region?
Date: June 13, 2013
For any of you that happen to be in Chile currently, I thought you might like to know that it’s opening day tomorrow at one of Chile’s most attractive ski areas, Termas de Chillan, and they are celebrating with free lift tickets for anyone who shows up (this isn’t very common at most ski areas in Chile or elsewhere around the world).
Termas de Chillan located in Chile’s 8th region, is known for having steep chutes on its upper mountain, treed skiing on the lower stretches, and hot springs right at the base.
It is home to South America’s longest chairlift, el Otto, which is a 20 minute ride that takes you half way up the Volcan Chillan.
The area is also moderately famous for its backcountry and big mountain ski culture and it’s not uncommon for people to continue on all the way to the top of the volcano (3,200 meters) either by hiring a lift on a snowmobile or by climbing the mountain with their skis.
From the top, 360 degree views stretch from Chile’s central valley to well past the border of Argentina.
It’s the only large ski area south of Santiago and because of the distance to the capital (about a 6 hr drive), it rarely gets crowded, although this Friday could be different.
It’s a pretty unique spot in the central Andes and if you find yourself in central Chile right now, this is something you might not want to miss
