Follow Up: Opening a Business in Chile in One Day over the Internet
Date: May 19, 2013
It’s official, it is now possible to form a business in Chile in one day over the internet.
Currently, company structures available through Chile’s new online platform (www.tuempresaenundia.cl) are limited, and you’ll need to have some things ready before starting the process online, but in time this new website should really make things easier for people trying to incorporate or make changes to an existing business in Chile.
Right now, the only type of company available through the online platform is the Sociedad de Responsibilidad Limitada. This translates to “Society of Limited Responsibility Society” and is similar to an LLC. These “partnerships” can have anywhere from 2 to 50 members. The assigned administrator or representative can but does not have to be one of the members.
If this structure suits you, you’ll need your Chilean ID card with your RUT number and the series number from the back of the card to register an account. (**Remember, you are forming a business here. Consulting with a lawyer and/or accountant prior to initiating activities would be a wise decision.)
After making an account, you need an actual business plan. The names of the partners, name of the business, types of activities the business will be engaged in, etc. If you have all of this ready, you will finally need a registered electronic signature to use for formalizing things (or be able to make a trip to the notary in Santiago). Over the coming months, a few more structures will be made available through the online platform, with the last planned ones being activated in the next year or two.
They had some problems with the site right at first because the system was overload just after being launched but this has been straightened out now. If they get another flood of users, the website could go down again temporarily.
If you are having problems with your account or would like more information and are in Santiago, you can stop by their office at Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins 1449, Torre II, Local 7, First Floor.
**Remember, Chilean companies file local taxes month and annually and forming a business in Chile may add to your reporting requirements in other countries.
